Study of American graduates and employers

The latest report of Project Information Literacy (PIL) is the output from interviews with 23 employers in the USA and 33 recent graduates from US universities. They were asked about the ways in which they were expected to work with information in the workplace. Similar results to some previous studies in this area emerged e.g. the need to find and present information to short deadlines and the need to work well with others to solve information problems. The graduates did feel that some of the skills the developed at university (e.g. being able to evaluate information) were valuable in the workplace and there are some interesting quotes. "This report is the first in a new research initiative at PIL called the "The Passage Studies." These studies investigate the information transitions young adults go through at critical junctures in their lives." The full report is at http://projectinfolit.org/pdfs/PIL_fall2012_workplaceStudy_FullReport.pdf

Exploring the information literacy of professionals in safety management

Yang, F. (2012) "Exploring the information literacy of professionals in safety management" Safety Science, 50 (2), 294–299
"With the rapid development of increasingly complex technology and large scale industrial projects, all kinds of safety problems become extremely intricate in daily safety management (SM). It is therefore indispensable to effectively collect, analyze, assess, and synthesize information that is relevant to accident risk. In this paper, the concept of the information literacy (IL) of professionals in SM is proposed, and a conceptual framework is put forward. Further, determinants of the IL of safety professionals are suggested, including individual attributes, safety climate and culture, information infrastructure, information technology (IT) human resources, production technology and management, and national information policy, law and ethics. Of course, further research on the IL of safety professionals should be carried out for effective SM." A priced article

i3 report: everyday information practice #i3_conference

Camilla Moring (pictured right) talked today about Studying information practice from a practice perspective: Outlining an analytical model of information practice, at the i3 conference at the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen http://www.i3conference2011.org.uk
She undertook an ethnographic study of sales assistants who had just started working for the Danish train company. Her theoretical base was the work of Etienne Wenger, with focus on situated practice and communities of practice (CoPs). Moring emphasised that the theory of CoPs was really an analytical tool (rather than a management tool!) She talked about issues of negotiation (e.g. negotiation of meaning in whether to follow or bend the rules about railway ticketing) and identity (with the idea of "trajectories of participation", identity developing through time and through engagement with communities).
There were a number of interesting findings presented, but just to pick out part of this, Moring identified four focus points in development of the newcomers' information practice. These were about the participants:
- asking (which provided information about rules),
- observing practice (so they learnt sales behaviour and locally negotiated ways of doing things),
- overhearing conversations (learning norms and values) and
- seeking printed and electronic information resources (to explore possible identities as salepersons, and keeping track of news to keep up-to-date).
As I said, there was a lot more of interest in this presentation, including the diagram you get a glimpse of, above, I will add any links I find about her research.

Royal College of Nursing IL standards

The UK's Royal College of Nursing has just published: Finding, using and managing information: Nursing, midwifery, health and social care information literacy competences. "These competences complement the RCN's clinical competence framework, helping nurses, midwives, health care assistants and nursing students develop their skills in using information and knowledge and apply this to their practice. Finding, using and managing information is relevant for practitioners and managers involved in evaluating professional standards, for students, tutors and for information managers in higher education and the workplace. They are also intended to inform team and individual learning and development." IL and KM in NHS24 & other articles

A few articles from the Journal of documentation:
- O'Farrill , R.T. (2010) "Information literacy and knowledge management at work: Conceptions of effective information use at NHS24." Journal of documentation, 66 (5), 706-733
"The purpose of this paper is to explore theoretically and empirically the concept of workplace information literacy (IL) and its connections to knowledge management (KM), and to examine the applicability of the mainstream institutional IL frameworks (...) to the workplace environment." This was a phenomenographic study of staff working in the medical advice telephone service in Scotland, NHS24. "The paper highlights the importance of developing organization-specific guidelines for IL development, endorsing views of learning and information use grounded in socio-constructive perspectives and a consideration of context as situated practice. "
- Yu, L. (2010) "How poor informationally are the information poor?: Evidence from an empirical study of daily and regular information practices of individuals." Journal of documentation, 66 (6), 906 - 933.
- Robinson, L. and Mason, H. (2010) "The information-related behaviour of emerging artists and designers: inspiration and guidance for new practitioners", Journal of documentation, 67 (1). (not yet paginated) "Reports an empirical study of the information-related behaviour of emerging artists and designers." They used an online questionnaire with 78 artists. " The group have generally the same information practices as more established artists. They place reliance on internet and social networks, while also using traditional printed tools and libraries. Browsing is important, but not a predominant means of accessing information. Inspiration is found from a very diverse and idiosyncratic set of sources, often by serendipitous means. Their status as emergent practitioners means that their information behaviour is governed by cost factors, and by needs for career advice and interaction with peers."

Study on school leavers' information behaviour

I am in Uppsala (Sweden), and yesterday gave a presentation about the Information Literate University to staff and students at Uppsala University (the pictures are of a workplace in their (very) old Carolina library and some books on the shelves of the old reading room). I have been busy with this and also have had a bad cold, so haven't got time at the moment to write this up properly. Instead here is information on a Swedish dissertation (quicker to post!)
Approaching the future: a study of Swedish school leavers' information related activities is a PhD thesis by Frances Hultgren from the University of Borås. Swedish School of Library and Information Science, published 2009 (in English with a Swedish summary). "The focus of the thesis is on how school leavers deal with the flood of information, advice and expectations that are directed towards them at a structurally induced turning point in their lives. ... The study is based on qualitative research interviews with twenty one school leavers during their last year at school and on a minor discourse oriented study of a selection of the information produced by major actors in the careers guidance system. ... Four approaches to information seeking emerged from participants’ accounts: 1) They use information seeking as a tool in making connections between educational interests and the future labour market 2) They use information seeking both as a tool in finding pathways to occupations and as a means of orienting within an occupational domain 3) Study and career information seeking is put ‘on hold’, and information seeking is associated with planning extended transitions, and 4) Study and career information seeking is avoided as potentially threatening or as meaningless. ... A greater focus on the development of an information literacy is suggested as a means of better supporting young people in the process of making study and career decisions." http://bada.hb.se/handle/2320/1818

Lawyer's information behaviour

A break from IFLA reports: think I missed this PhD when it came out: an interesting study of the legal context.
Makri, S. (2008) A study of lawyers’ information behaviour leading to the development of two methods for evaluating electronic resources. PhD dissertation. London: University College London.
"In this thesis we examine the information behaviour displayed by a broad cross-section of academic and practicing lawyers and feed our findings into the development of the Information Behaviour (IB) methods - two novel methods for evaluating the functionality and usability of electronic resources.
We captured lawyers’ information behaviour by conducting naturalistic observations, where we asked participants to think aloud whilst using existing resources to ‘find information required for their work.’ Lawyers’ information behaviours closely matched those observed in other disciplines by Ellis and others, serving to validate Ellis’s existing model in the legal domain. Our findings also extend Ellis’s model to include behaviours pertinent to legal information-seeking, broaden the scope of the model to cover information use (in addition to information-seeking) behaviours and enhance the potential analytical detail of the model through the identification of a range of behavioural ‘subtypes’ and levels at which behaviours can operate.
The identified behaviours were used as the basis for developing two methods for evaluating electronic resources – the IB functionality method (which mainly involves examining whether and how information behaviours are currently, or might in future be, supported by an electronic resource) and the IB usability method (which involves setting users behaviour-focused tasks, asking them to think aloud whilst performing the tasks, and identifying usability issues from the thinkaloud data).
Finally the IB methods were themselves evaluated by stakeholders working for LexisNexis Butterworths – a large electronic legal resource development firm. Stakeholders were recorded using the methods and focus group and questionnaire data was collected, with the aim of ascertaining how usable, useful and learnable they considered the methods to be and how likely they would be to use them in future. Overall, findings were positive regarding both methods and useful suggestions for improving the methods were made."

Co-evolving Roles and Technologies in the NHS: Barriers and Forces for Change

This project finished in 2006, but I don't think I've blogged it, and there are a number of reports and papers that came out of it. There was work relevant to information literacy e.g. the conference paper by Adams and Blandford Digital libraries’ support for the user’s 'Information Journey', which identifies three stages on the information journey: Information Initiation; Information facilitation; Information Interpretation (the focus was mostly on health and clinical workers, although patient information was also considered). It was found that the interpretation phase was not so well supported by digital libraries.

Information Literacy competences for service users in Nursing, Midwifery, Health and Social Care

The UK's Royal College of Nursing has developed a draft competence framework to help midwives, healthcare assistants and nursing students develop their skills in using information and knowledge. They based it on the Australian and New Zealand Institute for Information Literacy (ANZIIL) Framework, but link it to the RCN's existing career and competence framework. They now want to consult external stakeholders "with a view to seeking subsequent accreditation with the RCN Accreditation unit". There is a survey, open til 2nd October, which has the documents embedded in it. The username and password is rcnilcuser
